Brut, Louis Roederer, "Cristal", 2007June 7th, 1867, Paris - It was on this historic night at Café Anglais where the famous Dîner de Trois Empereurs or "Three Emperors Dinner" took place--an event many consider the most decadent gastronomic affair ever to occur involving 16 courses paired with the world's greatest fine wines. Amongst 1847 Châteaux Marguax, 1848 Châteaux Lafite, and Madeira from the 1700s it was the inaugural debut of Louis Roederer's masterpiece: "Cristal" that stole the show. In keeping with tradition, "Cristal" Champagne is released only in the most special years and continues to shine above many of the tête de cuvées to this day. A precise blend favoring Pinot Noir along with Chardonnay grapes coming from organically farmed vineyards, "Cristal" should never be taken lightly and is best enjoyed over life's most treasured occasions. Since the early 1900's vines have overlooked the Santa Clara Valley thanks to two American viticultural pioneers, Paul Masson and Peter Martin Ray. They are accredited with planting some of the first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vine cuttings from Burgundy in California. Today California's newest trailblazers have set their eyes on expanding one of its most promising regions, the Edna Valley. In the bucolic Edna Valley lies the Wolff Vineyard planted to Chardonnay vines dating back to 1976. These old vines result in an expression that exudes lemon blossom, lime balm, and honeysuckle with a tightly woven palate of pear flesh spiked by grapefruit zest and tangerine peel to finish. Flavio Roddolo, Nebbiolo d'Alba, 2013Flavio Roddolo is a traditionalist in the truest sense — a quiet craftsman who has been tending his vines in Monforte d'Alba since the 1980s, on the same family farm where he was born. Known for his reclusive nature and uncompromising devotion to authenticity, Roddolo works entirely by hand, producing wines in tiny quantities that reflect both the land and his patient philosophy. He is regarded in Piedmont as one of the great guardians of Nebbiolo, revered by collectors and sommeliers alike for his soulful, long-lived wines. The 2013 vintage offered conditions Roddolo cherishes: a slow, late ripening that preserved Nebbiolo's perfume and structure. Now at peak maturity, this wine unfurls with aromas of dried rose, cherry, forest floor, and spice, carried by vibrant acidity and a noble tannic frame. Founded in 1906, Nervi is the oldest cantina in Gattinara. It has holdings in the appellation's two greatest crus - Molsino and Valferana - as well as the top sites of Garavoglie and Cassace. The key to Gattinar's greatness is its terroir. A rare vein of volcanic gravel, on steep, high-elevation slopes. In 2010 the Barolo region was officially demarcated and recognized for its 181 "Menzioni" (think "Premier Cru" and "Grand Cru" classifications in France). These designations celebrate the soulfully expressive characteristics of each site's diverse soils, varying altitudes, and unique grape growing typicity. Outside of the Cote de Nuits in Burgundy, there is perhaps no other region that is studied and dissected in greater detail than the zone of Barolo. We are excited to highlight these "terroir-driven" wines from some of the greatest producers and vintages.

Montefico, La Ca' Növa, "Bric Mentina", 2018As you approach the village of Barbaresco, you'll find the Rocca family's 18th-century "La Ca' Növa" estate perched atop the renowned Montestefano vineyard—a place untouched by time with untold beauty. In recent years their Barbarescos have reached new heights surpassing some of the most esteemed estates in the eyes of many. Their Montefico bottling is sourced from a special parcel called Vigna Bric Mentina, which lies at the best part: the top of the sloping vineyard, facing south where the grapes receive the most sunlight. Their Montefico expresses rose petals, lavender, spice, crunchy dark berries, and a minty essence, a hallmark of the cru.166

The Produttori del Barbaresco makes some of the most renowned wines out of Piedmont today. Originally founded in 1958, after the Second World War, a young priest named Don Fiorino Marengo banded a group of 19 farmers amidst poverty and scarcity. From then on, the crew stuck to strict rules: only Nebbiolo grapes from Barbaresco, and focusing on the quality of the grapes, not just the quantity. By the 1980s, the label grew in prestige and size, and today more than 50 growers contribute to making outstanding terroir-driven Barbaresco.

The Wines of Angelo Gaja

Angelo Gaja is the man credited for bringing the small commune of Barbaresco out of obscurity. His influence has changed the way the world views Italian wine to this day. A master of Nebbiolo: the austere, tannic grape once considered only quaffableafter decades of bottle age, Angelo saw its potential as a world-class wine. Despite pushback from his peers, he employed new (and what most considered outlandish) practices both in the vineyard and the winery to promote freshness and elegance in his wine. Rufina, Selvapiana, 2023Chianti has always been centered between Florence and Sienna, the original growing zone that was first recognized in 1713 by Cosimo Medici III. In the 1960's, plantings grew outside of the original zone(now called Classico) into almost the entire Tuscan region. In response to falling quality, subzones were created, one great one in the commune of Rufina. Rufina's Chiantis drink a little more rustically, more earthy than polished. The appellation's champion has always been the impeccable house of Selvapiana, who delivered another classic bottling in 2020. (Bin 1362)74
