Matthiasson, "Linda Vista", Oak Knoll District, 2023Sustainable agriculture virtuosos Steve and Jill Matthiasson began their eponymous winery as a natural extension of their farming expertise. The couple founded Matthiasson in 2003, and Steve quickly became one of Napa's most in-demand vineyard consultants. He's trained the vineyard teams for clients like Araujo Estate, Spottswoode, Chappellet, and Robert Sinskey Vineyards. In 2011, Steve and Jill leased the Linda Vista Vineyard behind their house in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley and immediately sought to reinvigorate the parcel. Linda Vista features mature Chardonnay vines planted in 1989, which are renowned for producing striking wines. This bottling successfully balances richness, a result of the ample Napa Valley sunshine, with vibrancy and freshness afforded by the location's cooling breezes and maritime alluvial soils.109

For more than 160 years, the Laroche family has been dedicated to producing top quality wines from the Chablis region. The domaine's headquarters, the Obédiencerie of Chablis, reveals a heritage dating back from the Middle Ages when the Canons of Saint Martin of Tours were making wine. The "Saint Martin" title pays tribute to a Roman cavalry officer who became a humble monk and was elected Bishop of Tours, eventually being named the patron saint of Chablis. The "Saint Martin" cuvée is the flagship wine of Domaine Laroche, a blend of the most beautiful estate plots in the appellation.104

From the onset of his career he channeled his energies into sourcing the best fruit he could find and, if he couldn't, would farm it himself. After the success of his initial project, Pax and his wife Pam founded the eponymous Pax Cellars. Utilizing much of the same land for this label, he started to produce an entire range of wines focused on elegance, freshness, and Old World techniques. All his grapes are hand-harvested, foot-crushed, and fermented whole cluster–a nod to his favorite producers in the Rhône–and he has continued to innovate by farming Chenin Blanc, Trousseau Gris, Gamay, and Vermentino.79

Mending Wall, "Mortar and Stone", Napa Valley, 2022The name "Mending Wall" comes from the famous Robert Frost poem about two neighbors who meet once a year to examine the boundaries that separate them and that bring them together. The Mending Wall winery is a multi-family endeavor, consisting of winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, along with proprietors Frank Dotzler of Outpost Wine, and Mark Pulido and Donna Walker from Pulido-Walker. The goal of this team was to build a winery around the spirit of wine itself: a place where wine is shared and enjoyed without pretension. This bottling of "Mortar & Stone" is not an exception to this philosophy, as fruit is sourced from one of the last dry-farmed and head-trained vineyards in the Napa Valley.86

Château Belgrave, Haut-Médoc 5ème Cru, 2015Before the wines of the estate were world-renowned, Château Belgrave was a hunting lodge used by King Louis XIV–you can see this evoked in the artwork on the label. When an Englishman purchased the estate in the early 20th century, he renamed it after the London neighborhood he resided in: Belgravia. Situated on the outskirts of the St-Julien appellation, right down the street from other Grand Cru Classés Château Beychevelle and Château Lagrange, the wines are some of the finest produced in the Haut-Médoc each year. So committed are they to excellence that they are one of very few estates that have remained the same size since they were classified in 1855. A delicate, yet powerful balance of bright ripe fruit and rustic terroir, Château Belgrave's wines are quintessential expressions of the best "Left Bank" wines Bordeaux has to offer.162

Château Corbin, 2015Château Corbin is one of the oldest estates in St-Émilion, tracing its history to the 15th century. The Cruse family has been in charge of the property since 1924, passed down from generation to generation to a female heir, making Anabelle Cruse the fourth generation to helm the estate. She is assisted by her husband Sébastien Bardinet. The estate is planted in one large block on the doorstep of the Pomerol appellation. Their secret lies in the two soil types that make up their vineyards: ancient sands over an iron-rich subsoil, and clay near the Pomerol border. These terroirs directly influence the wines, which are known for possessing both power and delicacy, while maintaining freshness of fruit flavor and aromatic purity.138

Domaine Vincent Ledy, "Vieilles Vignes", 2021Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vincent founded his winery in 2007, though the first wines were not released until 2013. While Vincent does not come from a winemaking family, his experience at the respected Domaine Lecheneaut helped form his own winemaking style. The estate is only eight acres, but produces eight different wines. In the vineyard Vincent focuses on the quality of his fruit without the aid of unnecessary intervention. He prefers traditional farming practices, including using a horse to plow his vines. This "Vieilles Vignes", or "old vine", bottling combines Les Connardises, which was planted in 1939 and Les Petits Liards, which was planted in 1954.161

Jean-Luc & Eric Burguet, "Symphonie", 2020Alain Burguet, father to Jean-Luc and Eric, started his domaine after returning from military service in the 1970s. As a young man, he helped older vigneron tend to their vines, and as they gradually retired, he was able to purchase many small parcels across the Côte de Nuits. He approached his vineyard management in this old-school way: plowing his vineyards with horses, allowing cover crops to grow, and encouraging a diverse ecosystem around his vines. His sons officially took over in 2011 and are the first ones with any formal winemaking education in the family, having worked in California at Au Bon Climat, as well as at Domaine Tempier in Provence. The Burguets are frequently among the last to harvest, often seven to ten days after their neighbors, resulting in wines with more finesse and velvety tannins. This wine is sourced from parcels planted in the early 1980s just to the east of the Route des Grands Crus, and is a great example of Burgundy that is forward-thinking with traditional roots.211

The Wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

No winery is more famous or produces such legendary wines in Burgundy as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The domaine has been co-owned by two families, the de Villaine's and the Roch's/Leroy's, since 1942. Aubert de Villaine, a humble, charming, and highly intelligent vigneron, who is acutely conscious of the history of the domaine and the responsibility he bears towards it, has been the manager and face of the domaine since 1991, when Lalou Bize-Leroy left to focus on her own domaine. Often abbreviated as "DRC", the winery makes some of the most exclusive wines in the world, and 98% of their vineyard holdings are in Grand Cru vineyards, including their two monopoles, "La Tâche" and "Romanée-Conti". DRC's wines, for those lucky enough to have tried them, are regarded as the pinnacle of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Domaine Le Petit Saint Vincent, "Les Poyeux", 2021Dominique Joseph, or "Pelo" as he is affectionately called by his friends, is the fourth generation to lead Domaine Le Petit Saint Vincent. Pelo's friendly, direct approach is reflected in his wines and the improvements he has made at the estate, such as converting to organic viticulture and separating out his top parcels for single-vineyard wines. His wines are transparent expressions of the magic that happens when well-farmed Cabernet Franc vines flourish in clay, limestone, tuffeau, or, in the case of this featured wine, sand.137

Lionel Faury, "Les 3 Brunes", 2021The Faury family lived very humbly as farmers around the wine-growing region of Côte-Rôtie–they sold fruit, mostly peaches and cherries, and a little wine to the local clientele. It was Phillipe, taking charge in 1976, who had the vision and drive to introduce the world to the family's wine. He expanded slowly, entrenching in his son Lionel this drive for precision and beauty. Lionel took over formally in 2006 and has continued to improve upon the foundation set for him. Things are still done the old-fashioned way: minimal use of new oak, and punchdowns by foot, allowing for gentle extraction and beautiful finesse. The family has plantings dating back to the 1930s, and the "3 Brunes" cuvee comes from select parcels within the famous Côte Brune lieu-dit. Co-fermented with a touch of the white Viognier, this floral, exuberant, sophisticated bottling is a perfect compliment for all savory fare.191

Alain Graillot, 2022In France's Rhône Valley, there are few names as revered as Graillot. It was in 1985 that the late, legendary Alain Graillot, who after working with the venerable Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac, came back to his home in Crozes-Hermitage to start his own domaine. With each passing year, his devotion to the art of making hauntingly delicious Syrah from his organically farmed, stone-laden vineyards, was rewarded with an ever growing and highly dedicated following around the world. Alain's sons, Maxime and Antoine, have been in charge since 2008, continuing the legacy set forth by their father. All the work is still completely the same as it always was: hand-harvested, organic farming, whole-cluster fermented grapes, and aging the wines primarily in one-to-three year-old barrels.139

Domaine Monier Perréol, 2020John Livingstone-Learmonth, one of the most famous Northern Rhône wine experts, has included the wines of Jean-Pierre Monier in his small category of "STGT", or "Soil to Glass Transfer." This means the purity and transparency of the terroir expressed in the wines carefully crafted by Jean-Pierre is reflected so effortlessly in these wines that they deserve to be celebrated along with the best wines of the region. Deciding not to sell his grapes to the local cooperative in 2001, the estate has continued to gain the accolades it so well deserves. Combining resources with his good friend Philippe Perréol, the de-stemmed Syrah provides beautiful aromatic intensity, with finessed texture from the granite-dominant soils found on the steep hillsides of the Saint-Joseph appellation.132

Barale Fratelli, Serraboella, 2020The storied Barale family's winemaking history can be traced back to 1870, right when the tiny hamlet of Barolo started causing a stir as a hub for exceptional Nebbiolo in Piedmont. Francesco Barale, great-grandfather of the current owners, was among the pioneers in the production of quality wine from this region. Although based in the commune of Barolo, the family has a sole plot of vines in Barbaresco hailing from the famous Serraboella cru in the village of Nieve. While the vineyards are now proudly certified organic and the winery has adapted to modern practices, the traditional viticultural steps taken have been cemented since Francesco first started bottling under the family's name. The Barale family has never strayed from the classical: extended macerations, no new oak barrels, and showcasing elegance over extraction. Today, Luigi and his daughters, Eleonora and Gloria, carry on the family work in the cellar where, in their own words, "a delicate hand and time are the essential tools to maintain the quality of these wines."158

Franco Pacenti, 2018The Pacenti family moved to the town of Montalcino at the beginning of the last century making a living as sharecroppers. In the 1960s, Rosildo Pacenti, convinced of his homeland's potential to produce world-class Sangiovese, purchased the Canalicchio farm in the northern half of the village and became one of the 25 original founders of the Consorzio del vino Brunello di Montalcino. His son Franco took the reins in 1988, restoring the historic cellar below the old family farm and replanted vines across an additional 10 hectares of land. As Franco's children, the third generation of the winery, join him in the field and cellar, the wines continue to be rooted in tradition with an eye toward the future.163

Tenuta Le Colonne, 2021Bolgheri is a strong, vigorous territory: a place where international varietals express themselves with great impetus and where the first bottle associated with the "Super Tuscan" movement was produced. Tenuta Le Colonne is located in Donoratico in the southernmost part of the Bolgheri appellation. For their Bolgheri Rosso, Tenuta Le Colonne focuses on Bordeaux varietals, in particular, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate is located in a strategic position, being the winery with the vineyards closest to the Tyrrhenian Sea in the entire denomination. The sea exerts a mitigating action on the climate, increasing light exposure and generating a soft breeze that blows constantly between the rows. Everything here comes from and tells of the sea.97

Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore, Bussola, "Ca' del Laito", 2019Tommasso Bussola was a stonemason by trade, and inherited a small plot of his uncle's Valpolicella estate in the early 1980s. This inheritance included a small, old-vine parcel in the heart of the Classico zone. Inquisitive, curious, and experimental, Tommasso thought differently than most of the other growers around him, whose main goal was to sell their fruit to larger cooperatives. He believed that if he worked viticulturally to make his fruit better, the resulting wines would showcase the land and have more purity. And how that made a difference–the late, great Giuseppe Quintarelli was asked about the next "superstar" of the Veneto; his answer: Tommasso Bussola. Having handed down the reins to his sons, Giuseppe and Paolo, the wines continue to be a standard-bearer of excellence in Italy.103

Marqués de Murrieta, 2020Don Luciano Murrieta made his first wine in Rioja Alta in 1852, drawing on techniques he had learned while studying in Bordeaux. He was one of the first winemakers in Rioja to ship his wines abroad, shining a spotlight on a truly beautiful place in northern Spain. Adhering to "traditional" winemaking techniques, all of Murrieta's wines are aged in American oak barrels, all hand-harvested and sourced from the vineyards outside the Castillo ("castle") de Ygay that was purchased in 1872. Considered part of "Rioja's Aristocracy," winemaker María Vargas continues to create wines of balance, complexity, and harmony that delight and inspire drinkers from all points of view.87

The essence of V. Puro lies in expressing the purity of place, grape, and tradition, with a strong emphasis on minimal intervention winemaking. The "Alias" is made from the cooler portions of these ancient vineyards with an aim to express the freshness of Baga when hailing from the Cadoiços Valley, a terroir shaped by the Atlantic influence with soils of clay and limestone. V. Puro has a heartfelt mission: to preserve Portugal's viticultural heritage, to honor the old vines and farmers who came before, and to deliver wines of elegance, depth, and Identity.104

Villa Calcinaia, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, 2011This Tuscan estate has been home to the Capponi family since 1524. Villa Calcinaia is located in the center of the Chianti Classico region, around the town of Greve-in-Chianti, where brothers Sebastiano and Niccolo continue the family tradition to this day. Local grapes Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Colorino are hand-harvested late in the season and are dried in airing chambers until well into March, allowing the grapes to raisinate. They are fermented together and aged in small caratelli barrels, exposed to drastic shifts in temperature for seven or eight years to encourage sugar degradation and concentration of the wine. These supple, delicious wines are some of the finest dessert beverages in the world, a perfect parting sip at the end of a meal.168

Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Burgaud, 2022Bernard Burgaud is one of the more understated producers of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, making just one wine from 100% Syrah. After inheriting the family business from his father in 1980, Bernard began bottling his wine in 1982. As of 2019, his son Pierre continues the family's legacy as the winemaker for the domaine. Perched atop a steep hill overlooking Ampuis, they produce 1,000 cases a year from 22 acres of vines planted in several lieux-dits in the appellation. Resisting the trend towards bottling individual plots, they instead maintain the long-held belief that utilizing all the terroirs in one bottle results in a more complete and balanced wine.131

Pierre Péters, "Cuvée Reserve", Blanc de Blancs, Brut, NVCamille Péters, around 1919, was one of the first growers of the Champagne region to decide to bottle wine under his own name. In 1932, at the ripe age of 12, Pierre Péters, the eldest son of Camille, began to attend his first exhibitions alone and develop sales for his father's brand, and never looked back. He took over operations in 1944, and released his first vintage in 1946 under the "Pierre Péters" brand. The estate, now run by Rodolphe Péters, owns just over 19 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards, all of which are primarily located in the Côte des Blancs, where the soils are chalky and Chardonnay is king. Their flagship wine, the "Cuvée de Réserve", is made entirely Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes.374
