Colli Tortonesi - Terre di Libarna, Ezio Poggio, "Archetipo", 2019If ever there were an indigenous Italian varietal that could rival the body & complexity of white Burgundy, it would be Timarosso. Found in the southern-facing hills of Libarna in the Colli Tortonesi, Ezio Poggio champions the unbridled quality of the grape. Never using oak & only aging a short period of time on the lees, the wine rivals those traded in Dijon for texture with the added ability to adapt to a wide variety of cuisine107

Sauvignon Blanc, Cantina Andriano, "Floreado", 2021Alto Adige, with its climate nestled between Mediterranean & Alpine, is home to some of the planet's cleanest white wines. The pure mountainous air combined with the elevation create growing conditions impeccable for great Sauvignon Blanc. Within the larger region of Alto Adige, the Cantina has identified a site called "Floreado"in the Dolomites that they have always thought to be the ideal spot in the valley to ripen Sauvignon Blanc. While other great growing regions may impart their unique regional flavors, Alto Adige produces pristine varietal interpretations77

Bibi Graetz, "Casamatta", 2020Nothing about half Israeli/half Norwegian, Tuscan-born Bibi Graetz is typical. He took his family's few acres of vineyards originally used for personal consumption & transformed them into the birthplace of some of the region's most famous wines–all in about two decades & without traditional training. This blend of traditional Tuscan white grapes based primarily on Vermentino is meant to evoke the sea-breezes, sun, & smells of the coastal Maremma region within Tuscany61

Etna Bianco, Terra Costantino, "de Aetna" 2019One of the most fascinating events (aside from volcanic eruptions) to happen on the island of Sicily is the awakening of the wines of Mt. Etna. The reds & whites are based untraditionally not in vineyards, but on flattened portions of ancient lava flows from different eruptions over several centuries in a territorial system known as Contrada. Terra Costantino's vineyards climb the southeastern slope of Mount Etna at Contrada Blandano, in the territory of Viagrande, the heart of the Etna DOC zone. From here, you can see the sea and taste the windblown tang of salt in the air.77

Round Pond, Rutherford, 2021Family-run Round Pond Estate not only specializes in pure, expressive wines; their estate includes a whopping 12 acres of olive orchards & one of only two olive mills in the region. This bottling captures different snapshots of the Sauvignon Blanc grape's character thanks to multiple picking passes during harvest, providing the wine with complex layers of fruit representing the different ripeness levels at which the clusters were picked.96

This one has everything we love—it's unapologetically bold with a plush texture balanced by enough citrus to make you look forward to the next sip152

Langhe, Tenuta Carretta, "Cereja", 2020Many Italian rosé, or rosato, mimic the style made famous in Provence—with a twist. They are dry & light like the French iteration, but instead of being a wine more often consumed apart from food, they often are bottled with an overt friendliness towards the dining table. Tenuta Carretta is closing in on their 550th year of viticulture, so they are starting to get the hang of it. This rosato is a blend of Piedmontese grapes Barbera & Nebbiolo, created with a nod to both Provence & the great terroir of the Langhe67

Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, "Sant'Emiliano", 2018The Incisa della Rocchetta family is probably best known as the proprietors of Tenuta San Guido, the winery responsible for creating Sassicaia, the first "Super Tuscan". However, the family's provenance is surprisingly not in Tuscany but rather in Piedmont, on the bank of the Tanaro River just east of Asti. "Sant'Emiliano" spends a year & a half in French oak barrels, which affords the wine an elegance & depth of flavor not typically found in Barbera. This is an incredible value & a rare opportunity to enjoy a little-known wine produced by one of Italy's greatest & most revered winemaking families90

Cantina del Pino, "Ovello", 2015Ovello is the northernmost cru in the village of Barbaresco. The soils here tend to produce wines of longevity & complexity without sacrificing on flavor. At the most dramatic place one could plant vines, Cantina del Pino was established on top of the Ovello hill over 100 years ago, perfected by multiple generations of one family. The intensity of the soil plus the epic quality of the vintage combine for a Barbaresco that proves why this appellation has so much potential165

The wines, via careful advances in wineries & vineyards, have returned to their status as one of the world's most important wine regions. Volpaia is a winery (and village) that has been through the highs & lows of Chianti's success and now finds itself in a promising position after all the region's advances. Two thirds of the village of Volpaia's residences are dedicated to the creation of this wine.92

Il Paradiso di Frassina "Moz Art", 2016It's often said that the Sangiovese from Montalcino may be the finest iteration of the varietal. Il Paradiso di Frassina is located on the northern side of the Montalcino hill, where the lack of solar power comes across as pure elegance in the final wine. But what makes the vineyard unique isn't its location, but rather the 50 loudspeakers continually subjecting the vines to Mozart's finest works. From the rows between the speakers, at the top of their vines, the finest fruit is selected only to be made into Brunello di Montalcino. Simply stated, this should be a symphonic experience211

Most notoriously known as the home of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, one would not consider this to be an ideal place to grow grapes. Dangerously steep, rocky slopes, unpredictable weather, and the threat of volcanic eruption at any point? Very few are up for the challenge of making wine under such extreme circumstances. The work of these daring vintners results in wines made with the region's indigenous Nerello Mascalese grape like Graci's: energetic fruit & smoky earth with an elegant structure, making Etna Rosso the next big thing for Burgundy & Piedmont lovers94

Cristom, "Mt. Jefferson", Eola-Amity Hills, 2021The list of producers that call Eola-Amity Hills home reads as the cool kids club of the Willamette Valley. With a slightly colder average temperature than most of the rest of the valley, Eola-Amity Hills is known for producing wines that balance finesse and grip. At Cristom Vineyards, 'Mt. Jeff' has been the flagship wine since the winery's founding 15 years ago. Utilizing whole-cluster and native yeast fermentation for this cuvee, Cristom aims to produce "balanced, dynamic wines of intensity, structure, and length." For us, we just like drinking their wines.126

Memento Mori, "Vanitas", 2019The team at Memento Mori (Latin for "remember you must die") strives to inspire each of us to live every day to the fullest. Founded by three childhood friends, Hayes Drumwright, Adriel Lares and Adam Craun, the trio have committed themselves to crafting sophisticated wines of tremendous balance, honesty and intensity. The wine is being made by Sam Kaplan (Arkenstone, MAXEM), who has been with the Memento Mori team since their first vintage in 2010 and has been instrumental in facilitating access to such venerated vineyards as Andy Beckstoffer's Dr. Crane and Las Piedras Vineyards, among others. Vanitas is the second label that the Memento Mori team produces, with only 175 cases made in 2019. Indulge in existence with us, as we remember that life is too short. While we are all here, let us enjoy and drink well!242

The quality of wine is based on the quality of all its inputs: good vineyards, smart farming, & pure winemaking.
